The draw for this seasons Anglesey cup
competitions has been made at the recent Anglesey Junior
Football League Meeting. A new competition has been
introduced this season at the Under 12's age group. The
Jimmy Lawlor Memorial Shield has been introduced to
preserve the memory of Jimmy Lawlor; whose name is
synonymous with youth football in Holyhead.
The competition will take the form of two
mini-leagues; where each team within a group will play
each other in home and away ties, before the winner of
each group go head to head in the final.

Hotspur
Fly The Flag at Wembley |
|
|
On August 6th 2009, 14
young footballers, in the under 10’s age group from
Holyhead Hotspur Peibio F.C, lived their dream of playing
on the hallowed turf at Wembley Stadium in front of almost
3000 spectators. They had been selected by the Welsh
Football Trust to take part in the annual FA/McDonald’s
National Football Festival in London.
Hotspur Manager Kevin
Lewis recalls the special moments of a wonderful occasion.

“On Wednesday August
5th, Holyhead Hotspur Under 10’s set off on our once in a
lifetime pilgrimage to the home of football. Parents,
brothers, sisters and players filled a coach for this
unique trip. We stayed at a Premier Inn at Heathrow the
night before the festival and that evening we travelled to
Windsor, to relax and to prepare for our special day. I
say relax, we brought a ball along with us and before
long, we where having a training session on a park green!
Surely the most idyllic location we’ve had training, we
had Windsor Castle to our right and the River Thames to
our left.”
“Thursday finally
arrived, a massive downpour greeted us at breakfast but
soon cleared to expose some glorious sunshine. We set off
for Northwich Park, a venue 5 miles from Wembley, where
the festival began. The pitches where immaculate and the
organisation top drawer, with each player receiving a
goodies bag and coaches given unlimited bottles of water
and bags of fruit for the kids. Here we played three
games. Our first match against a team from Essex, and came
away with a credible 0 – 0 draw. Next we faced a Luton
based side, who must have had the biggest centre half I’d
seen, he was massive. We played really well in this match
with Harry Lewis getting our first goal and Jorge Black
our second, an excellent score-line of 2 – 0 to us at
full-time. Our last game was against a team from Croydon,
again a great result ( 1-1 ) with Jaydon Gregg scoring our
goal.”
“After Northwich Park it was time to head for Wembley. As
we approached the stadium, the noise was deafening on the
coach, with everyone singing the old Wemb-er-ley,
Wemb-er-ley song. On arrival we were given our passes and
tickets, spectators went into the stands whilst the
players entered via the players entrance, after a small
walk we emerged at the famous tunnel to be greeted by Sir
Geoff Hurst and Trevor Brooking. We then went into our
seats in the stand for the formal introduction and the
briefing for the days format.”

“The Kids where itching
to get onto the pitch and at 3.45pm, the call came, we
walked along the side of the pitch to be greeted by the
many Hotspur fans who cheered as we passed, holding up a
large banner. A photo with Sir Geoff was next, and to be
honest, what a gentleman, he spoke to the kids as if they
where the only ones in the stadium, in-fact there were
over 700!”
“The main Wembley pitch
had been divided into 4 small pitches, ours was pitch 4
and our opponents were a team from Huyton in Liverpool. I
was determined that each of our 14 strong squad would get
the chance to play in the biggest ten minutes of their
young lives. On a personal note, it was quite a surreal
moment seeing the boys warming up on the pitch, was it
really happening?”
“Any doubts that the
players might freeze where banished early on, because we
where playing some wonderful football, emulating all the
greats of yesteryear who have graced this pitch and took
the lead, at the same end that Geoff Hurst got the iconic
'they think it’s all over' goal, Jack Ford was the lucky
young Holyhead player to score the first goal. Holyhead
were soon 2 goals up after a goal from Jorge Black, 2 – 0
and Holyhead where really on fire. With just a minute to
go Jay Pritchard had the dubious honour of scoring an own
goal to make it 2 – 1, he was mortified, bless him, but,
if it’s good enough for Gary Mabbutt and Stephen Gerrard,
it’s good enough for our Jay.”
“With a 2 – 1 win, we
proudly walked back along the side of the pitch to the
acclaim of the Supporters, to then walk up the steps up to
the royal box to receive our individual mementos of the
day. Mr Eric Harrison, the famous Manchester United youth
coach, mentor of Messrs Beckham and Giggs, presented the
awards to the kids and a final team photo taken. Our day
was over but we made a point a having just one last look
at the Stadium and I told them all to take it all in and
realise what has happened in the last two hours.”
“We arrived back in
Holyhead at 11.30pm with all our Wembley Souvenirs and
photos but above all, our Memories of a wonderful
experience. I would like to thank everyone who made this
day possible, Darrell Hughes for organising the
paper-work, entry tickets and players’ passes etc. Mr Gus
Williams, Anglesey's Football Development Officer, who had
nominated us for entry to the festival. The Holyhead
Hotspur Committee for their kind donation towards the cost
of our coach, and finally all the parents for their
fantastic support, not just at Wembley, but throughout the
season.”
